Our mission is to foster cross-cultural exchange in this multi-ethnic community, provide education, training, and arts outreach to promote, and preserve ancient culture of India through performing arts such as dance, music, theater, and other related arts.

Dance

History:
Hema Sharma established Nritya in Kansas City in 1988 at the insistence of several community members wishing to promote classical Indian dance. As the premier dance school to be established in Kansas
The Mayor’s Ethnic Enrichment Commission, The Nelson Atkins Museum, The Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley & Kansas City, Missouri School Districts, The India Association of Kansas City, The Gujarathi Samaj, recognizes City, Nritya.

Nritya has been on the Kansas Arts Commission's Arts On tour Roster since 2006.
Dance
Hema Sharma: Hema Sharma is a native of Chennai, India where she
started dancing Bharatanatyam at the age of 8 under the tutelage of Kancheepuram Gnanaprakasam. She is also well-versed in other Indian dance forms such as Kuchipudi, Mohini Attam, Kathak and folk dances.
She has extensive training and experience working with renowned artistes, like Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman and the Dhananjayans. She made her public debut in 1963 and has performed at several venues in India and the USA. She is now well-recognized as a teacher and has students from varying ethnic backgrounds.
Mrs. Sharma is on the following Rosters: Touring Artists for Kansas Arts Commission, Teaching Artists for Kansas City Young Audiences. Mrs. Sharma holds a bachelor degree in accounting and economics, worked several years as a teller. She quit her job in 1993 to allocate more time to the community. Mrs. Sharma has been an active voice in the Indian Community since 1988. She has served the India Association of Kansas City on various different committees, as Program Chairperson. She was the Chairperson of Indian Association for the year 2002. She was the Program Chairperson for the year 2002 for the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of Kansas City.

Hema Sharma has been the Ethnic Commissioner representing India on the Mayor's Ethnic Enrichment Commission for over 19 years. Mrs. Sharma has conducted hundreds of outreach programs integrating performing arts and cultural workshops in various Metropolitan Kansas City Schools and in the tri-state area. She volunteered her time every year for 2 weeks at the Center for International Studies of Shawnee Mission School District educating the 6th grade students on India. She has been the Mayor’s Ethnic Enrichment Commission Indian Commissioner since 1993.

Mrs. Sharma has been on the board for the past several years as a member, Third Vice Chairperson, Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, and Chairperson for the past 2 years. Since she joined the EEC, she spent so much time volunteering for the good cause of EEC. Mrs. Sharma is the first recipient for 1994, 1995, 1996, 2001, 2004, 2007 Madalynne Brock Trophy award presented by the EEC for outstanding contribution to the cultural outreach community

Class Descriptions
LEVEL 1: Beginners
Practical: Adavus – (Basic fundamental technique of Bharata Natyam) Tattadavu 4; Nattu adavu 3; Didithei 2; Attami-neck movement; eyes and eyebrow movements.
Theory: Samyuta (double hand) and Asamyuta (single hand) gestures, slokas from natyasastra
Dance: Mooshika Vahana, Pasani eka dantam, Ga ga pa pa, Mangalam, Manjira dance.

LEVEL 2: Beginners

Practical: Adavus – (Basic fundamental technique of Bharata Natyam) Tattadavu 8; Nattu adavu 7; Ta thei thei ta 4 or more hand variations; Didithei 2; Attami-neck movement; eyes and eyebrow movements.
Theory: Samyuta (double hand) and Asamyuta (single hand) gestures; Pataka Hasta vineyoga (uses)
Dance: Sa ri ga pa, Vara Veena, Ghunguroo dance

LEVEL 3: Iterative
Practical: Kudithu mettu adavu-theihath thei hi 4; teermana adavu- tadhinginathom 4
Theory: Tripataka, Ardhapataka hasta vineyogas, Paada Bheda (foot positions)
Dance: Kamala sulochana, padams-action songs; folk dances

LEVEL 4: Iterative
Practical: All Adavus: kutta adavu, uci adavu, tattu mettu adavus, kitataka darikitathoms, kartari adavu, mei adavus, paichal adavus, sarukkal adavus
Theory: More Hasta vineyogas, Siro bhedas-head; Dhrusti bhedas-eye; Greeva bhedas-neck movements
Dance: Misra Mallari, Pushpanjali or Ganesha Stuthi, Kautuams, Alarippu 2, Jathiswaram 2, Tillana, Padams.

LEVEL 5: Iterative

Dance: Sabdam, Padams, Varnam, 2nd Tillana
Theory: - Abhinaya (facial expressions); different classical styles; folk dances, choreography, etc.
